What happens to your E-Waste?

Collection

We will collect any amount of E-waste from anywhere in the UK.

Your company can choose from our range of containers or for bulk collections provide a rough estimate of the amount, type and weight of the equipment that is to be collected. This will allow us to allocate the correct vehicle and appropriate resources for the collection.

Selection

Once on site, and subject to the client’s agreement, the WEEE will be selected for recycling or re-use. We have systems to record the make, model, serial number, grade and weight of every item selected for re-use.

All items destined for re-use are handled, at a minimum, in accordance with PAS 141:2011 – the industry standard which ensures that genuine reusable working items are sold and  avoids the illegal trade in E-waste masquerading as second hand products.

Visual Assessment

In agreement with clients, items that have a potential for re-use are visually inspected to check for signs of physical damage. Damaged items are moved to the quarantine area for further assessment or potential stripping for spares. The outcome for each item of equipment is then registered on the client asset list.

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)

All appropriate equipment that has passed the visual inspection is then subject to Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) by our own internal qualified staff. Our testing procedure involves: preliminary visual inspection, earth continuity tests (for Class 1 equipment), insulation testing, and functional checks.

Final Visual Check

All labels, stickers and asset tags are removed using either a micro steam gun or hot air gun (only manufacturing tags and PAT test labels remain on the equipment). Equipment that is suitable for resale is then recorded on the asset list and moved to our central warehouse facility, with non-suitable equipment sent for recycling.

Resale

We want to follow the recycling hierachy to ensure sustainable resource and energy use:

For clients who agree we aim to optimise reuse taking into account repair and re-marketing costs.

In order to achieve optimum resource efficiency and sustainability we are currently carrying out extensive trials and testing equipment with a potential for reuse through an asset management service.

We intend to provide quality second-hand equipment to third party maintenance companies, commercial organisations, eBay and the general public. Working to the BSI standard PAS 141 will ensure that no original manufacturer is deemed to be responsible in any way for equipment that has been re-sold through our asset management system. Watch this space for more information.

Recycling

For those clients who require secure destruction and recycling we ensure that the E-waste is broken down through a series of processes into base materials. Metals and plastics are separated and processed for re-marketing. PCBs are sent to specialist reclamation companies where precious metals are extracted and the remaining plastic is recycled. CRT monitors are de-manufactured and the plastics and copper recycled. Cathode ray tube are transferred, literally next door, to CRT Recycling, our sister company, a specialist recycler where the leaded cullet and high grade optical glass is manufactured into end products – in this way we ensure total ethical, efficient and auditable recycling.
